Someone that occured to me recently with the air safety debate - if you get a bottle and it has small "scuffs" not deep scratched in the actual body of the bottle - is that a hazard?

Do the bottle have some form of "clear lacquer" on the top that is to combat any issues from this?

Id imagine if you were playing with a lacklustre bottle cover (or none at all) and slid on some gravelly stuff or stones in the ground you might get this. Is it something to be paranoid about or is there some leeway in the design of bottles to compensate for inevitable things like this?

Scratches in the protective coating are the result of regular use
Scratches are not a concern if they do not expose any fibres.

Impact damage may appear as dull white dimples in the protective coating
Have the cylinder inspected if the dimple measure more than 7/16" or expose any fibres

Abrasion has exposed fibres
The cylinder might be repairable at an approved inspection facility.
This cylinder must be inspected and tested before filling or use.

Severe impact has chipped protective outer coating and exposed fibres.
This cylinder must be inspected and tested before filling or use.

As a rule, any composite cylinder that has damage that penetrates the protective outer coating or that cuts, unravels, or in anyway exposes the fibres underneath should be taken out of service immediatley and inspected at an approved testing facility
Never use a cylinder where fibres have started to unravel.

thanks for that, think this needs to be stickied somewhere myself to alleviate fears over bottle safety.

it seems my initial instincts were correct and that normal wear, or even inadvertant scratches such a small tool marks if you were fat-handed removing a reg perhaps DONT mean curtains for a bottle , which is heartening when you can splash out anything up to £150 on one.

Cheers

Thats correct.
By the looks of it, as long as no fibres are showing, you're laughing :D
