What do you all think? I'm not talking about what "gun" is the best; this is a pump or semi question. I started out using an SL68II, PGP, and a Sniper. I feel using a pump for the first few years of playing helped me develop certain skills, such as aiming and concentrating, a little better than they would have if I used a semi. Of course, this is just me, to others it may make no difference. Then again, some could argue that my skills aren't all that great anyway, so maybe using pumps was detrimental. :) Not a word Manning! Either way, what do you all think? Do pumps help you acquire/fine tune any skills?

Yes. You learn respect. If your first car is a Ferrari you would have a dam hard time if they jumped into a pinto. Same thing with paintball if your 14 years old and your first gun is an angel (and we see alot of kids like this) you develop this attitude.

Its the "Look at my gun, its the best so that makes me the best to" attitude. Yes they can shoot fast, but ussually they have no concept of how to move on the field. Learning to play with a pump and learning to play when you are "outgunned" increadably benifical to a paintballers bag of tricks. I have seen many of the young bucks call them selves out and walk off the field when there guns go down or when they run out of paint or air, playing with a pump teaches you to be a little more selfsuficant on the field it teaches you how to play when (god for bid) someone on the field can out shoot you

Heck, I notice a difference when I have to play with an Autococker. Since I can't quite get the speed that my Angel allows, I have to concentrate a hair more.

Eric, I'd normally strongly agree that it's good to start with a pump, but I'd say it hasn't really helped you on your sweet-spotting. I'm not sure if it's really helped you at all on anything. A good example would be last tournament when you let that guy run all the way from the back center of the field and into my bunker. Remember that?

The way I remember it

Manning, First of all, I do believe you got hit before you even made it to your bunker. Also, the guy didn't run from back center, it was up center, and I hit him a few times before he got to you, yet he kept running as if his goal was to unleash his fury on a newbie forum moderator. :D

pump or semi

I think starting with a pumps better. I wish i started with a pump, but my 1st gun was a rhino. Once I get the money, I'm gunna buy a pump just 2 use every once and a while, cause my shooting usually isn't that good. My guns accurate, but I'm not 2 great of a shot.

Whatever suits you best, mate. I love pumps, but if you are playing tourney versus semis and electros, you may find that your options get a bit limited, as superior rate of fire on a small field tends to swing the balance. Then again, your skills are probably (sheesh - almost certainly) better than mine, so if you get by with a pump then go for it.

Easiest thing is to get both! Sounds expensive, but second hand pumps aren't too difficult to get hold of, and they're usually extremely cheap :D

I started out using a Tippmann model 98. It is a really great gun for the price. To tell you the truth, I have never used a pump before, so please don't quote me on anything. Just here to help. I found it to be really reliable gun. I used it for 5 months and it didn't break on me once. When you go out to your local field and see somebody that has one, try it out. You would be pleased. ;)

hmmmm

i started out with a talen ghost(pump) then saved up and bought a rebel..... same price as the tipman98. only difference is is that the rebel is more flashy than the 98 but i think they did a test were they ran a 98 over with a hummer and it still worked???? even if u dont have a pump gun completely oiling all moving and air parts (except ur saftey) and ur gun should shoot a little more accuratle but not to much... as for a pump impriving ur skills it does sorta i beat a friend with a semi but he was stupid and thought he was invisble under a tree.........
