It's all a matter of personal taste, and strictly speaking there is no such thing as a woodsball or speedball marker

Different markers support different playing styles, therefore an a5 would not tend to be appropriate to play on a compact speedball field on a game with high rates of fire and for sprinting, ducking and diving etc

That's not to say an ego is out of place in the woods. It's light, manoeuvrable and can shoot a small amount of paint or a lot of paint

Back on subject though, if you like the a5 then the x7 phenom is an advancement

Otherwise there is an abundance of choice, see if you can get to one of the retailers warehouse shops and check some out for how they feel or ask other players at walkons or events to have a feel of theirs, some will let you have a quick game to try out as well

Good advice :)
i started out in the woods with a tippmann 98 and have a lot of respect for any tippmann marker, i once dropped a Tippmann A5 in a river and it still played on lol
Having said that you will out grow the tippmanns quickly if everyone else around you are using tourney markers and once you have used one in the woods theirs usually no goin back ... But it then starts getting expensive more paint, better playing gear, and maintenance etc etc

if i was to do it all again from the beginning ........... tippmann all the way :)

It depends wether you solely want to play woods ball or you may want to play sup'air??

As said above a tourney marker is not out of place in the woods as most of the people I know play with ego's but a Mil sim marker is a bit restricted to woods ball. I started playing with an ion and loved it but I am now buying an etek 2 to play woods ball and sup'air so it really up to what feels right for your playing style....

Hello

Another option could be go for an Planet eclipse Etha and then buy the EMC kit so you could have the best of both worlds. If you want add bits to the gun like bi-pods, scopes you can when the EMC kit is on. If you then want to play sup-air all you have to do is remove 10 screws and you hav your self a tourney marker.

the type of gun depends on what your needs are.

do you want a gun that has the aesthetics of a military marker? well you want to look at guns made to have that look or with different mounting options like the tippmann X7, BT Delta, empire TM-15, etha + EMC

do you want a gun for playing short games in the woods (anything 30 minutes and under)? then you would be best purchasing a true tournament style gun, but the best gun here is a whole other debate in itself. i'd probably just make a general recommendation to get a poppet gun for the efficiency side of things since the games are a little longer.

do you need a gun for shooting large amounts of paint, or playing large scenario games (1 hour plus)? you will want to find something that can be useful with a remote line setup but isn't too heavy. To avoid the weight issue you want to avoid really heavy mechanical guns or those with lots of accessories and i'd probably suggest a GoG g-1 or something similar.

For woodsball you don't need to be attaching loads of gear to the marker.
The term MilSim often gets used for woodsball & scenario. But these games are not Military Simulation, there are MilSim games going on in the UK and you may want the tactical addons for those.

In the woodsball / scenario scene it is handy to have rails etc for addons when playing night or indoor games. The same may apply for mounting cameras. You can also do that without rails and attach lights, cameras etc to barrels.

Otherwise the lasers, sights etc are all adding extra weight and give limited functionality to enhance your game.

I agree with all the other comments here.

Like yourself I started off with a basic A5 but still felt that I was being outgunned by people using electronic markers, so quite quickly I upgraded the A5 by fitting a better barrel and the response trigger. These mods were a definate bonus and a lot cheaper than selling on the A5 and getting a new marker.

Many years later on I still have an A5 in my marker collection which still gets taken onto the field and given a good work out. So before rushing out and spending some cash on some electronic all singing and dancing marker do seriously consider what types of games you want to play, how oftern you want to play and how much you want to spend on servicing, batteries and balls.
