ok so i was looking at some dye autococker two piece barrels for my proto slg and they have numbers like: .690 .684 and .688
what exactly do these numbers mean?

They are the diameter sizes in inches for the barrel, also called the bore. Generally it is best to "overbore" which means you get a larger barrel than needed for your paint. It is a good idea because paint can expand in heat and moisture.

If I was you, I would get the .690 ;)

they are the bore if you are unsure of your paint size, get a .690 its a good all round bore.

Edit - damn beaten!

Or you could be adventurous and go for the .684 and try under-boring. You get better consistency and efficiency. (Although to be honest, you don't see a dramatic jump in efficieny, but there is a slight increase)

It's a bit hit and miss with underboring. One of my mates has a .685 barrel, and he had hell at the big game with barrel breaks.

A mid sized bore is much more recommended

Scrap the Dye, get a un1tech from Warped Sports - You get the starter kit for £30 with the .689 then upgrade to the full set of bores - .693 and so on.

Sizing paint to barrel always helps prevent breaks & get better consistency. I've got Empire, Freak and Unitech kits in a selection of sizes. I blow a handfull of paint through my barrels at the start of the day. Anything that rolls through is too loose a fit, but too tight can cause barrel breaks. I shoot a cocker lots so need a good fit to prevent roll outs.

Most of the paint I've shot of late (Blaze, Sterling or Proto) suits .687 -.690 bore size. But in hot/humid conditions it's best to re-check, as the paint expands leading to breaks later in the day.

i use a .689 unitec barrle, a little under 2 cases through it, through a ion and a pmr, not 1 brake.

i have also used a .692 and got one or two brakes from about 500 balls,
never hand anything less than .688, so cant comment on under-boring

If you're only buying one barrel then go for a larger bore to be safe :)
If you can afford it then go for a large one and a slightly smaller one / selection of smaller ones.

With the Dye barrels (and all other 2 piece barrels), the fronts are universal and fit all the different bore sizes ;)
