The benefits and disadvantages of all features on barrels are arguable, what porting does is to allow air to escape - either a greater area of space to supplement the .68" to of the front of the barrel to reduce resistance in front of the ball, or to stabilise the ball by releasing air behind it just before it exits the barrel tip.
It also reduces sound to a degree by avoiding the pop that would happen if there was no porting.
If you are into suppressors then porting from the barrel is the way air will escape into the supressor to be supressed
