Some sports like cricket or say swimming, people are born skilled, for example they pick up the bat and the shots follow without coaching at a young age.

Is this the case with paintball?????????

Must all the vital skills be coached??????

Obvioulsy people are born fast runners

What do ya think peps?????

I think its nature over nurture.
some people will never develop the hand eye co-ordination to consistently catch a ball, after years of practice they may become better but then you get some young lad who catches it every time.
Their was discusion a few years back about a sporting gene making some people more likely to be athletic, Ian Botham and his son were quoted as an example as both do or did well in sport.

Paintballers are born, no question. But then again, so is everybody else (except perhaps Robbo, who was designed by the secret test labs of the KGB).
Seriously, like a lot of other sports, most skills used in paintball have to be taught. But there is also the presence (or lack of) 'God given' talent. Some people, no matter how much training they put into it, will just not get good at something. Take running fast for instance. A lot of people do not realise that the ability to run fast is a combination of talent and skill. There are ways to utilise your body in order to run faster. Some people who are not that fast can become really fast after working on their technique, some people can not. This can be because they have a poor bodily coordination, something that you are born with or without. Through training these people may become proficient at running, but they will (almost) never excell at it.
Likewise, someone who has the talent to run fast, but does not use this talent, will never be as fast as someone who has mediocre talent, but does train in running.
So it's a combination of natural talent, which is probably better called potential, and training.

The answer is, and I'm not being trite, is both, and quite obviously both !!

Example : Ollie Lang, Chris Lasoya, Kenny Clamper and so on, hardly done any rigorous, sophisticated training whatsoever in their lives and yet.....well, you lot know just how good they are.

And on another continent, we have my old mates the Russians, and no explanation other than 'coached' can describe the talents of these guys.

The Yanks display nature, the Ruskies display nurture, a generalisation 'yes' but nonetheless wholly appropriate.

'Vive la difference' is what I say mate !!!

Can you imagine if the Yanks menitioned trained as hard and consistently as the Russians? It seems that the mindset over here is just different. But if it ever happened...:)

I dont really think that player like Lang, Lasoya, Klamper could train like the russian does, I think that they will stop to play when they will need that, it will be too boring for them.
As you said I think that American and Russian mindset is completly different.
And the time will say if the Russian legion are right or no, but I think that they are really near to be the best team in the world, if they can keep up with their trainning without burnout.

Eric, I wouldn't wanna alarm you or anything or even possibly expose your chronic lack of geography awareness and pardon me for asking, but do you have any idea where Russia is ?
I mean, the Russian Legion all come from Moscow and as far as I know, Moscow is still very much in Europe, anything past the Urals is Asian mate...wanna explain your comment now or just book yourself back in 7th grade geography classes? :)
Jeeeez
