the magic annodising pixies use their magic annodising dust and skills to make the perfect combintation of colours.
sometimes though, it can go wrong as the accuracy fairies are very moody, and have been know to mess up the procedure.

in all honesty though, i dunno.

and you've got me interested so im gonna go have a look around.

ok. my first guesses are not far off, and i dont mean the pixies.

did you do physics at school, about positive charges attracting negative.

well it uses this principle. the first site i went on said that during a regular annodising, the aluminium is held in a jig in the tank. this jig is made of aluminium (short life jig, easy to use) or titanium (long life jig, harder to use, and expensive)

the piece being held, a body for example, has a current passed through it, this actually wears away some of the metal, 25microns apparently  now when the dye is added, the oppositely charged body will attract the dye particles, this adds 50microns, so the overall thickness increase when annodised.

about fades, I couldnt find alot to quickly explain it be heres a quote
'Fades aren't too tough, just time consuming. Dye it the dark color, then slowly lower the part into a bucket of bleach until the area that will be the light cover is completely submerged, then slowly pull it back out and dunk it in the light color. Seal it and it's done. I've done splash by flinging dark colors at light colors, but it never came out very good'

this was just some simple anno done at home i gathered, im sure industrial processes are much more detailed and random.

errr. that should help, i probably missed something out, but i prefer the pixies :p ;)

This is true about the electrical charges creating a new liquid metal colour over the top. Fades are done i imagine in the industry by having a machine that pulls the body out at the correct speed so it fades to the darker under colour.

Not for the faint hearted :D you just need a diode, cathode, a high voltage generator like a tesla coil and some coloured liquid aluminium . :)

Simple! :( :D

tesla coils are cool

bzzzzzzZZZZZaaappp die little man.
mwahaha command and conquer

these annodizing kits run from about 200quid to 1500quid.

would be cool to see what you could do with the cheapo kits.

Gonna have to get my propeller - spinner done like the one on that Extra 300, they only come in boring chrome so its nice to see a new colour. Extra 300's in 1/4 scale rule anyway :D

Cheers Mike! :)

ANODISING AURORA

In final R&D stages at the moment, It takes 20000 volts and five stages of finishing to produce this revolutionary new coating. What you get is a superhard finish that appears to change colour as you move it in the light. The effect is unreal.

20k volts!!!! damm that must be expensive

Expensive when you bring down the local grid :D

I am happy with my NICEIC 10,000v rating lol, you can hear 20,000 hum from 150ft in the some stations so i dont think i will be holding the prop-spinner in myself :D

coooooool. ahhh so its 20000volts not 12500. all i need now is the baby elephant, a white rhine and a diamond cut glass and my experiment will work.

err i mean, wow
