Angel Cup-why 8-man?

Hey Nick, why 8 man? rather than the conventional 7 man format? or maybe trying some more 10 man format so that we can get over the pond and have a go at the septics? :)

Just wondering on the reasons for 8? What benefits do you see for that? or do you just want to shake things up. :)

Why 8 man

Well why not 8 man. Its always nice to be a little different. As we have already done the 10 man, 7 man and will be doing a 5 man later in the year I thought it is time for a bit pf a shake up and to offer new things and guage the response.

Regarding 10 man - we will be doing another early next year so ths Banzai can conme back and defend their title.

Rushers will also be back next year to defend the Angel Cup which was a big sucess yesterday.

Dates for the 8 & 5 man events will be announced shortly so watch this space.

Nick I'd love to see a build in team sizes such that we can get to 10 man play again. Having seen a lot of 10 man in the states it is quite a different game and It would be great to see a resurgence over here.

Maybe 8 man will get that reserve playing... and then we could have a 9 man in September... so you need another and so on until we get teams back to 10 man :)

I'm sorry I missed the 10 man event, I'll endeavour to be at the next.

Should be interesting!

Simon, I think you will find, and I would hope, 10-man maybe becoming a thing of the past.
The 7-man format is now I think the industry standard of play, the 10-man gives rise to a lot of boring and extended games as is sooo evident in the NPPL / PSP league at the moment.
With the IAO going over to 7-man and the pressure for a world series to have consistent formats, I think the writing is on the wall.
Just my opinion you understand.

Very interesting Pete. I see where you are coming from and that 7 man is becoming more of the norm (maybe due to a demand from teams that find it easier to field 7 players? and the lower associated costs to a team with shorter games and less paint flying...)

But is it more boring with 10man? I don't have as much experience of 10 man games as yourself but whenever I have been to big events in the USA and watched or played 10 man I found games were more likely to have strategies played out and there was more 'game play', Actually in a similar fashion to how the Russian Legion are implementing it in 7 man as per Amsterdam (and therefore I may have just argued around my own point... ;) ) I think this may be due to the fact that with more players on the field losing one or two to an outstanding play is worth the risk? I like watching games which are very 'involved' and not just a sweep from one end to the other.

Of course we always will get boring arsed teams that will stalemate whatever the format. But until we have more teams who can work a 7 man field like the RL then what else can we do to instigate game play and thinking manouvres on the field? Giving teams more players to work with might help?

More often in 7 man as a game plays out the team that goes up two players keeps on going and eventually wins and the loss of a critical player can be vital, not quite so in 10 man.

Maybe Nick is onto something and 8 man will be the combination of both that we are looking for? It is a nice round number :)

p.s. I think if the World format went to 7 man then the RL could go over to the world cup and destroy! Definitely if they continue playing like they did in Amsterdam.

p.p.s. also after having talked to Jerry Braun about 10 and 5 man events as compared to 7 man events I don't think he would see it likely for the World Cup and PSP events to go 7 man? He had some very interesting and valid points from a promoters behalf about why 10 and 5 man at one tournament is a good format. Inlcuding the encouragement of teams to attend from an earlier point since not all teams can put together even a 7 man squad.

If the NPPL goes to 7 man it seems 5 man will disappear. I think this would benefit the players, but not the sponsors.

Simon,

Will you be in France? I owe you a beer or two from last year.

double edged sword

Simon,

I say that assuming most 5 man teams have an alternate (most likely 2 or 3). With that in mind, they would be able to play at the top level of their bracket (nov, am, pro) and not be the "side-show" before the the 10 man tournament. This applies to NPPL and the other large 5/10 man series'. Also, this would give the tournament itself more competition in any given bracket.

If the NPPL moves to 7 man the rest will follow. Almost historically, everyone wants to emulate the NPPL. This would mean more local 7 man events. The biggest draw for me to 5 man is the fact that on almost any given weekend I can play a 5 man tournament. This can't be said for 10 man. I also love the 7 man (and 10 man) style of gameplay (compared to 5 man). So, more local 7 man events would mean more practice for the big series'. Again leading to better competition.

Even if it takes local events an extra year or two to adopt 7 man. It is a much easier transition to 7 man from 5 man. Again, I believe this would lead to more competitive tournaments.

The reasons the promoters would lose out is obvious. On that note, they have shot themselves in the foot with 5 man. By treating 5 man as sub-par paintball, players have gotten a bad taste in their mouth. LA not having a legitimate finals is an example.

I should clarify though. The loss of 5 man won't help the players, but the replacement of it with 7 man would.

ya think?

10 player is great if you're into paintball - you can see and understand it on a whole bunch of different levels than your average joe public. However to those outside the sport, 10 player looks boring.

7 player does allow for a slightly more dynamic game, and means that people can see and understand it better.

Can we say "global standard"?
