yes CO2 can freeze parts of a gun but it shouldnt do any permenant damage and noyou cant run air out of a CO2 bottle.

Depends on what you want from it. The dials and things cost extra, steel tanks are cheaper, but are heavier and only come in 3000psi, smaller tanks are cheaper but naturally they don't hold as much air. I paid $240 (us) for an 88ci 4500psi crossfire tank, but you can get them much cheaper. If you play front, I'd recommend a 45ci, 4500psi. A front player on my team uses it and he's as mobile as a monkey, I myself am a back player, so I like the big tank for long games and to get the sight point in my marker further from my eyes so I can get a little more precision. But like any other piece of paintball equipment, use what fits you, borrow someones tank thats really big, borrow a small one, and find something in the middle that suits you.

The Co2 is stored in a liquid form in the bottle and is VERY cold, its the liquid that can enter the gun and freeze o-rings and eventually cause permanent damage to the gun. If you get an anti-siphon tank (run about 60 bucks for a 20 oz) then no liquid will enter the gun.

The main reason people use air over Co2 is that air is much more dependable, stable, and consistent. For a really good explanation go here.

That pretty much explains everything.

The only problem with air is that for the base system is costs much much more. it can run into the 500's, and average is about 200-300. Compared to Co2 which you can easily get for under 100.

If your a spray and pray type then get the air, it will give you better consistency and accuracy. If your the type that wont take the shot till you know you got a hit and dont spray that much Co2 will do ya good. I've got a Co2 but i plan to go air since it is better for the gun and is more consistent. All in all if ya got the money, go air. its better .
