I'm looking at getting an air system for my Spyder (maybe the Melee from Planet, baby permitting!), and apart from getting it filled/ refilled on-site or at some paintball stores, can it be done using a plain ol' air compressor at home? What would I need? Also, what's the deal with refills using dive tanks? I wouldn't have thought it possible, but what do I know...

Anyone give me some advice, I'd be real grateful...

What you need with a scuba, is a scuba fill station, you can get those pretty much at any paintball store and they will show you how to put it on and everything, and for the compressor....i wouldnt recomend it b/c most compressors that you and i would have wouldnt b even close to 4500psi - 3000psi so just stick with the scuba idea :D

depending on where you shop the dive tank fill rigs should be about £60-£80. MAke sure you get the right one for your dive tank e.g if you got a dive tank that has no threads in the head you need an A-clamp fill rig...also don't buy an aluminium dive tank as they are prone to explosion so i've been told by a dive shop :p

just keep it in test....i was told not to buy one whatever i do because they are dangerous but if it's reasonably new then they must have solved the problem.

What do you think your air system is made of? Under the spun fiber wrapping is a aluminum tank, refilling from an aluminum
dive tank is ok as long as you do it slowly, dive tanks alloy
or steel are not designed for rapid venting of gas, both metals will work harden over a period of use, this is why they must be hydro tested. The hydro test checks the elasticity of the metal,
when a tank stops expanding and contrcting it fails.

If you can afford it get a 12 litre steel 300 bar dive tank.
Then get a 300bar fill rig, these screw into the valve on the tank which has a deeper/longer thread than the 232bar tanks.
If not, get a 232bar tank and A clamp fill rig.
Then all you do is attach the fill nipple on your air system to the snap connector on your fill rig. then make sure th bleed valve on the fill rig is closed (spring loaded button on 300 and thumb screw on 232 A clamp) then slowly open the main valve on the dive tank. Watch your guage on your bottle, when it reaches your fill prassure, or stops filling, close the main valve, open the bleed then dissconect your bottle from the snap connector.
Always fill slowly, as its better for both bottles and also, your bottle will get warm, if you fill too quickly, which means when it cools youur fill preassure will have dropped, so you may need o top up.
Easy.
