Does anybody out there use and air assist, and if so do they help with feeding or are they just a gimik?

i have one on my shocker and i would be inclined to say it is good. I have never had any problems with it ( exept some 1 braking it ) it seems to feed wel. The only problem is when you have a stack of less than 4 balls because tey can bounce out of the hopper.

Yup, pretty much my thoughts on it too. I loved air assist on my Shocker, and I'm about to put one on an LED Angel. Given the chance, I'll not be without it on a marker that can do it. www.animalpaintball.com sells a hardline air assist which is particularly good. Check it out.
