Anything can be rethreaded, but if you have stripped the thread you will have to ream out the old thread and cut a new one into it. No reason why you can't do that- except no regulator in the world will then fit it :(

Helicoils are not an option where 3000psi+ in effect.

Hey I just had a thought.... don't write the bottle off yet. You can't rethread the tank and use an "ordinary" threaded regulator, but Govnair regs have a slightly larger width bottle adapter, so if you found out the thread dimensions of Govnair regs, you could take the bottle to a decent engineering firm and have them thread out the bottle neck to the Govnair dimensions, and use a Govnair reg.

You would be stuck at 3000psi operation, but it's better than writing off the tank altogether, and Govnair regs are normally dirt cheap secondhand.

Just a thought.

Rethreading the bottle could weaken the structure. If you think it's really worth it make sure you get it retested before filling it. Most likely would fail the test though and then you have wasted ur money it getting it re-threaded.

A rethread should only cost a few quid, and yes, ovbiously you will have to retest the bottle. It shouldn't weaken the structure though, any more than the manufacturer threading the bottle in the first place.

The hydro test is much more about measuring how much the cylinder walls bulge under pressure.... the normal point of failure on composite bottles is the part where the aluminium bottle has been cut away and replaced by carbon/kevlar weave. The bottle necks are solid metal and massively overegineered anyway.
