Colour is applied to aluminium components through a process called 'anodising'. I'm not sure on the exact technicalities but it involves the items being submerged in a solution of acid and dyes, high voltage current is then put through the solution and the dye solution is bonded to the surface of the material creating a layer. Anodising varies in quality between companies with the best being thick and tough and the worst scratching and rubbing off easily.

Due to the complexity of the process it's not something that one can perform at home. Spray painting really doesn't work very well...trust me. Pretty much all markers these days come anodised in a variety of colours and finishes.....the more you pay the better the anno job usually. No real 'tips' to provide, find a marker you like that is right for your needs and it will no doubt be available in a pretty colour that you like. Some places do do custom anno jobs outside their regular 'standard' finishes, but these usually come at an extra cost. Here's a few places that offer custom anno jobs, give 'em a ring

I don't know about the alien imp, drop the makers an email and ask them if they can anno it in any specific custom colour based on your specification.

Again, there is no colour that looks 'best', it's all down to personal preference and what floats your boat. Personally I'm a fan of really nice deep blues, but recently I've been having affection for some of the nice red to black fades that are out there on markers like the DM4. I will say this though, that in general very high polish shiny finishes are generally a bit more susceptible to light scratches because you notice them more than you would on a dust or matte finish.
