Finally getting the time to sit down and read your article in this months PGI issue #180, it reads the importance of a players self confidence in a game/tourney and how that can transend throughout a team (You use Ground Zero in Amsterdam '03 as an example).

The point is you describe a tournament using 3 sort of games a team play: The great game, the bad game, and the default game. With the default being the game played most often.

My question is: Explain a default game - in an idiot proof way and can you please elaborate what in training can be done to improve self belief in play? :)

P.S. Understood the article completely, but want to get my brain around what you're sayin and apply it when I train :D ;)

Shelly, I think the default game can be best understood by accepting that in all the games we play, some are really good, some really bad and the rest are default.
These games are your 'average' game and consist of all your default skill levels.
Defaulting is where you play second nature, you display the skills you have managed to ingrain into the fabric of your play because of the amount of times you have trained and the level of concentration you have applied when training.
Your default game requires relatively low levels of concentration.

There will be games when you get your ass shot off coz u didn't concentrate or selected a bad move or your techniques slipped.
There will also be games where everything you touched seems to turn to gold and you shoot shed loads of fools and win games.
The default game is the remainder of the games you play, the ones totally reliant on the skill levels you have trained into yourself.

I spend most of Nexus's training time into trying to get their default game improved on the field of play with varying degrees of success.

As for improving self-confidence when training, it's all about selecting the right drills, doing them properly, and the subsequent overseeing of them by the coach as they put it into practice.
This hopefully positive feedback loop provides the backdrop for a confidence building environment in which the team should flourish.
I hope this explains it all Shel.
PS Shel, say 'hi' to Phil and Leslie and Jade for me :):)

I see your point - kinda contradict my self there, just really wanted an idiot proof explantion - see I train 13 year olds (DraXxus Paintball Academy) - wanted the best way to describe a default game to the kids.

I know I didn't explain myself.

The self confidence was for me and the pac.

That is almost unbelievable

Robbo - "Right class, if a marker fires 20bps, and fires at 280fps, at what position on the field will that front player get hit, and how many bonus balls will he get if the Back player stops firing when the first ball gogs him?"

Classroom Oik#1 - "Whats a Marker? Is it a gun?"

Classroom Oik#2 - "Whats a Back Player?"

Robbo - "141 both of you OUT!"

Sorry, couldnt resist.
