Royal Mail don't do second class packet posting. The longest they do is express 48 (correct me if I am wrong).
It seems he has not been online since the payment was made. If it was me, I'd be looking into seeing if I could contact them by other means, or possibly even a paypal dispute. I may be jumping the gun here, but it does look a little dodgy. Even the slowest couriers usually take less than a week.
Although saying all this it may be more beneficial to wait a little while longer, what with post being delayed by the Christmas rush etc

I've contacted him by email and he said he sent it on thurs didn't say how it's just **** I'm just trying to buy my own gear and this is last bit I need to get going I got everything else now lol it best turn up.

If you have contact with him, why not ask for something more substantial than email? Like a phone number or something? Direct non-delayed contact. Ask who he sent it with, and if there are any details such as tracking. Whoever he sent it with must have given him proof of postage if it really goes bad. I'm sure it will turn up. Just give it a little more time ;D
I've got no other way of contacting him but I have found him on Facebook and sent him a message lets see if he messages me back. I've bought a lot of stuff off other people online and they haven't let me down before but there's always a first time. The main problem is he's just not replying to any email
Since you gifted payment, theres no way of getting your money back through official channels (Paypal). The cheapest method he could have used is via Standard Parcels which can take about a week - which means it may yet turn up!
Just be patient and hope for the best. It doesnt look as if he has sent it tracked (otherwise he could've provided the tracking number straight away) which means that it will most likely just be left on your doorstep when it gets delivered, so keep your eyes peeled in the mornings.
