4500 reg on 3000 bottle?

Yes you can..but...it's iffy, because you are then able to fill a bottle, to 4500 psi, that is only designed to take 3000 psi...which is a just the weensiest bit dangerous.

The 4500 reg, wont vent excess pressure...so...the bottle could fail, the threads on the bottle could fail...so either, it blows up in your face, or shoots off and does nasty things to anything in its way.

In short...I wouldnt...

Usually the working pressure and the max rated pressure are different. A 3k regulator won't have a 3k burst disk, it'll have something a touch higher. I forget what 3k tanks use. I know my 4.5k regs use a 7k burst disk, as 7k is at or under the max rated pressure.

BTW, you don't want to fill your tank to the max rated pressure, only to the working pressure.

It seems like it would be smart to make 3k and 4.5k components use a different thread, doesn't it? For safety's sake. As it is, the person filling it should always verify the tank is rated to what they are filling it to. Since you are aware of the 3k tank, you should let them know.

You can mix and match, but it can be risky. No matter what parts you are using, the lowest working pressure listed for any part in the system is going to set the maximum safe pressure the system can be used at.
If anything is 3k, then the whole system is rated for 3k, even if other parts are designed for 4.5k or 5k. You know the line about a chain only being as strong as it's weakest link....

Most people only check the rating on the bottle, so putting a 3k reg on a 4.5k bottle is iffy at best. The only thing I would be willing to do is to put a 4.5k reg on a 3k bottle, and fill it to 3k.
