I have heard stories that the black dragun marker, which i am probably purchasing from Phoenix paintball Ltd this weekend, shoots at 220fps out the box. In some cases it is said to be fine, however if this is a problem, what should i do. I have heard of two different options, change springs, change input pressure. Can someone clarify what should be done. Most likely i won't encounter this problem, but its always nice to know just in case. :D (paranoid newbie i hear you say!)

I've heard you can use high pressure and a soft spring or lower pressure with a heavy spring. What would these different combos do? I don't quite get what the input pressure actually does...

I'll hazard a guess that it's a blowback operation..

In which case the bolt moves forward under spring pressure, scoops up the paintball and releases a blast of gas as it enters the back of the barrell. The gas then simultaneously blows the ball out of the barrel and also forces the bolt back to catch on the trigger sear.

Since the gas energy is being expended both backwards (against the bolt spring) and forwards (against the paintball) you have a couple of ways of increasing the speed of the ball. You can either just up the amount of energy (by increasing the input pressure) or else reduce the proportion being expended backwards (having a stiffer/heavier spring).

And the simplest way of stiffening a spring is - stretch it out.

Alternatively, I could be talking out my arse - I havent used a blowback since 1994 and can't really remember how they work....

i thing that everyone was over complicating things here.

Have we assumed that the velocity adjuster doesnt work, or something.

When you have the marker infront of you, youll find that at the back end of it is a velocity adjuster. either a big wheel type thing with a locking screw, or a allen key adjustable bolt.
wind this in (clockwise) to up the velocity. then start to worry if you cant get it to 290fps.
