Ideally air, but nothing really wrong with using C02 on it.
Air is more consistent, with it being regulated, and isn't effected as much by temperature changes as C02 is.

im thinking u'd need a serious amout of liquid in there, enoph to make the regs freeflow, but cant say ive ever seen it :-pi only seen the hoses blow coz sum1's put a crappy front reg on there and overpressureixed it

in the days before inline regs i saw a couple of hoses go pop!
