So everyone agrees that the only way to make a .50 cal paintball perform as well as a .68 cal paintball is to use a heavier fill, right?

So assuming this paintball is not going to have horrid performance characteristics, the hits are going to hurt more and cause more bleeding.

So, advantages:

- Save a little on paint material costs and shipping costs

Disadvantages:

- People playing paintball have less fun.

Result:

Less people play paintball.

Further, CHEAP PAINT IS NOT AN ADVANTAGE!

Oh, it's nice for tournament players, but rec players don't want cheap paintballs. Cheaper paintballs don't make paint cheaper, they just make people shoot more paint. And rec players don't want to be shot at with more paint. They wouldn't be able to tell you this if you asked them, because they don't know why they don't like playing with more paint being shot at them, they just know they don't like it.

Same with paintballs that hurt more when they get hit. Players will just know that they tried paintball, it wasn't fun, and they won't pay to do it again.

Unfortunately, there are still a lot of "field owners" out there (particularly people who are not business people but are paintball players who start fields because they want the status of being a field owner) who run their fields like players and still do not understand that cheap paint is bad for business, as they continue to drive new players away from the game by putting them on the field in a high-volume paint environment. And I expect those same field owners will think that if the paint costs less per case, and they can sell it for less, then it must be good for their business.

It won't be. Over the long run, those fields will go out of business in favor of fields that understand that high paintball prices yield more customers. But in the meantime, how many players will try .50 cal paintball, not have fun, and not play paintball at all because of it?

.50 cal could be a good product for milsim fans and others who don't mind bleeding when they get hit. But .50 cal showing up where rec players are playing will be disastrous.

well i just "thought" at a tournament the governing body stated what caliber of ball could be used and what what they said went ad you couldn't use anything else but .50 but unless i asked someone in that position i guess we wont find out till world cup

Ses, any new ball will have to validated by the respective governing bodies of each country..and these governing bodies will be made up of federations and promoters .... but, you must realise, this then becomes a matter of politics, I think it pertinent at this point to ask yourself, what happened when XBall hit the world of paintball?

Richmond was the person behind that, he also has many friends in this industry and I think the main determinant in whether any new idea is validated or not is when people consider if that new idea is good for paintball as a whole.
If it feels that criterion then I think its adoption will be relatively seamless as was XBall.
I think you guys need to be looking at dragging positives out of this instead of pulling negatives from it.

I can definitely see the for the milsim market. These are players not likely to be negatively impacted by harder hits, partially because they're wearing pretty substantial tac vests already. And it can be even 'more real' than airsoft currently is, and maybe grab a lot of the airsoft folks and pull them into the paintball industry.

But I remain incredibly skeptical that this would be a positive for the general paintball market.

Hopefully they keep pushing Billy Ball for the rec market (a concept which I think is a phenomenally great idea) and target the .50 cal to the milsim crowd.

Oh, forgot to mention, .68 cal hits look better on TV and in pictures. :)
