Why would they need to out themselves?
Surely the more enlightened people among us don't care what people get up to in the sack. (i currently count you in this category Devrij, i'm not suggesting that you expect this to happen).
and in response to your original post, I (would like) to think we have got to the stage in the Uk where most people are no longer bothered by someones sexuality. in our world it's all about the paintball and that's how it should remain. Black, white, gay, straight, religious, atheist, ginger etcetera etcetera etcetera whatever, pull trigger, shoot fools.
And as for the whinging about the "PC brigade", it's simple, it all comes down to manners. If someone asks you to use a certain term to describe them then what's the problem? I like to be referred to as "that **** over there". The majority of gay people like to be referred to as gay. Simple. That's no great hardship is it?

I don't think that the kind of thing you are talking about is as basic as the difference between fancying men or women. I think that's where the nurture argument comes in. I have zero evidence to back this up though. I'm guessing now.

e.g. you can have foot fetishists, but they can be either gay or straight. However being gay or straight is an essential part of your identity before your fetishes come into play.
