dont forget how my dad helped, he doused his flame, as he was honestly on fire according to my dad his clothes were melting on him, and thats why he ripped his jersey and gloves off, Nige is a brilliant bloke and the paintball community wouldnt be the same without him, the bottle did mangle the gun, similar to the figure of 8. when my dad got there he covered Nige with himself and risked his own life of being a human fire ball, everyone did a brilliant job in reaction time, Niges hopper was broken as well, even though the compressor is a flash fill, it couldnt have been the compressor, stako have a history of dodgey bottles, my dad says "at the age of 13, you allow them to have a bottle of 4500psi, anything over 3000psi should be outlawed for this age unless they have supervision, we tend to take things for granted that everyone knows what they are doing, but do they? As every rig at every venue is different, this place however, my dad says is the best venue in the country, thank you to the guy who helped me dress his wounds and thank you to kitch for a fast response........good luck mate and make a speedy recovery"

I Believe STAKO quote a MAX filling rate of 100PSI a second, so if the compressor was flash filling then that's likely to be a contributing factor if not the cause.
As Leigh has already suggested the plastic liner only used by STAKO's may be the cause(When flash filled at least).

Hope you make a full and speedy recovery Nige

Why?

The bottle never failed - any bottle that had a flash fire inside (as it seems this did) would have had the same result.
It would be more sensible to say let us review how much magnesium content is in the regulators because once that has ignited it self sustains.

This occurrence has the potential ability to cause an awful lot of problems to paintball that I suspect most people do not comprehend.
When accidents happen abroad we just think we are lucky and carry on as normal, the simple fact is now it has happened in the UK at some point the Dept of transport will become involved and this little insignificant sport will come under the magnifying glass from people who can stop it overnight if they think the safety risks are unacceptable.

Wow - 100psi a second - is this definitely correct ? The rig today was filling me from 1000psi to 4000psi in about 1.5 seconds. I must admit, I thought at the start of the day, "that's one badass fill station - hope it's safe !". The only reason I wasn't going all the way to 4500psi was because it was filling so quick I didn't want to leave my gun on for any longer than it took to literally turn on / turn off again. I think perhaps we may have a potential answer to the cause here ... combination of 'very' flash fill + stako bottle.

However - what rate should other makes of bottles be filled at ? Does anyone know ?

THIS MUST BE A WAKE UP CALL.

One other point, what would have happenned if the explosion had damaged the cylinder bank that was stored less than 2 feet from the fill rig / site of the explosion ? I think we would have been talking multiple fatalities. There were probably 50 people at the time in a 30' radius - doesn't bare thinking about does it ?

I took 2 x 16 yr olds to their first tournament today. In the past I have spent considerable time convincing parents that paintball is totally safe.

Thanks out to Kitch, the Freekz and Bluey for handling the aftermath (plus whomever else was involved). We'll all be thinking of Nige (don't know the guy - but best wishes fella).

Where do we go from here ? What body can shed some light / facts on this stuff and define future procedure ?

And ban Stako's - hell yes ! It's just not worth the risk it ?
