I have seen it happen to a friend so, like I keep on bloody saying, I get all my knowledge from here and my local field.

Mineral oil like WD40 does.
It's more to do with the mixture of the air, oil and the heat from the friction of air passing through the tiny hole in the reg which causes the "explosion", that at least has always been my theory of it, I'm sure someone with a working knowledge of regs and HPA like Tom will clarify it, or someone with physics on their side.

Maybe you are all right ( I having a sneaking suspicion that you probably are).
