Upgrades for Ion

When I first got into paintballing I was exactly the same mate.

I bought stock Ion, and there was faint hissing coming from the inside. Since the manual for the Ion is shockingly bad I had to ask my team for help. They took it apart and one of the hoses and come away slightly. It wasnt a major problem.

What I will tell you is that the Ion has this a mind of its own. The pressure will turn itself up... as a result I blew the gauge on the side. Only like £5 to replace but the gun was an absolute nightmare. Although it is essentially meant for beginners, due to price and supposedly easy to take apart.... for a new person, when u first lift the top part off with the board, and see hoses everywhere, your scared that your going to break it further.

I dont mean to offend anyone with an Ion, and its always down to personal preference but get rid of it. I believe this gun is better for people with knowledge of guns. It always requires small tweaks here and there and I was never happy with it. What you will also find, and I know there's so many people who will agree with this, that the first upgrades you will get are 1) Q-lock feedneck, 2) Rail and drop forward, 3) trigger. Then further on... bolt, reg, etc, etc

I now have an Ego 06 that I bought from p8ntballer forums and its my pride and joy. I love it!!! Straight out the box, I put paint through it and it runs as smooth as something REALLY smooth! I then chronied, check settings etc, and the manual explains everything in detail.

Its seriously worth putting a little bit more money into a better gun.

This is my personal experience. Other people may have different opinions, but just make sure YOU are happy with your gun when you go out onto the field, makes the world of difference.

did your mother teach you nothing oil based lubes eat rubber (no vasaline and condoms!!!) haha, get a nice silicone one from a PB shop, i use Smarts Parts Sleek, one tube is £5er and it will last you years

i argree that the ion is a tweeking gun, but i belive you should get to know your kit, and learn all there is about it, know what i can do, and read the sites i linkyed up, with 6 months of messing on and upping an ion you can just about solve any problem with any other markers you might buy, or so that how i see it, bu t im the kinda guy that will take a dremmel to mine hehe

Mate I'm not sure where you get the opinion the Ion is for people with knowledge of guns, it's so easy to work on, much eaiser then other markers I've owned, as for the pressure turning itself up, I think you must have had a dodgy reg as I have two Ion's and neither do this.

I'll go along with your upgrade path , q-lock, decent asa, trigger, but the stock internals are OK for starters and the reg is fine.

the stock reg is on par with the shocker reg, and i own and love the ions, cos they can be fixed so easy, tinkered with and upped and customised for little cost

i love to fiddle with my marker and the ion teaches you the basics and is a good fun, yet very very reliable, and decent marker, you can upp it to a £800 marker with £250 worth of upgrades

hello again all,

I went and bought some SP Sleek lube for my ion, put it on the bolts like shown in that walk-thru and then wen i put it all bak together i heard a change in frequency kind of noise coming down the barrel.

I then did it again and this time put some lube on the banjos o-rings, the changing frequency noise has stopped but i cant tell if its still leaking or not.. so currently i have my gas in and im watching the guage...

will post back in 20 minutes with results.

well, 23 minutes has passed and i cant see much difference on the guage.. well i cant tell any at the moment. You would have thought it wud have leaked a noticeable amount by now wouldnt u ?


Is there a way I can seal the hopper feeder place and stick the barrel into my sink to see if any air comes out? or will that screw up my barrel?

I cant tell by ear if its leaking.

Opinions are dangerous things....

Don't stick your marker in the sink!!!! As for the leak, if you can't hear it with your ear, then the leak aint substantial enough to worry about.

No offence taken and I know we all have our own opinions but I think this post does nothing to promote the positive aspects of how the low budget Ion gives high budget performance to the masses.

I started with no knowledge of paintball markers and went onwards from there. I quickly learnt about the marker and can now strip it down and fault find with confidence. All this knowledge I have attained from this exellecent forum and the following website:

ARG is a mate, and no offence to him but he went from not having a scooby doo to being confident about the innards and workings of an Ion, and if he can do it, most can...

Ion's are great markers, and the bottom line is you spend £130 on a marker you get £130 worth of marker. It aint an EGO or a DM or a PM, etc, etc, etc but then they cost £600+ when new, so you can't compare them.

I've tinkered and up'd my Ion loads and it basically fires so sweet. It aint got the build quality of these other more expensive markers, but on the field where it counts, it shoots at the 15bps max fire rate consistently and gives as much sh1t to the other end of the field as they do.

Stock Ion's are great with just a few ups, but really up'd Ion's are the mutts nuts....

Just don't get carried away with tinkering it, as the old rule applies... 'if it aint broke don't fix it'. A well setup Ion will need maintenance far and few between.

Well its been 2 hours now and its still just over 2500 psi which I started off at.. i cant really tell if its gone down and I cant hear a hiss out of end of barrel any more..

but all i did was put a bit of sleek lube on the o-rings of the banjos :S wud u expect this to work normally?

Anyway, I think my problem is fixed so thank you very much for all your help
