Personally, i would stick with either Nikon or Cannon.
both company have just released new models, so some of the old models can now be found at good price. Nikon D50/70s, Cannon 350d/400d would all fit in that price range

That is the lens that I have and it might be a bit slow in focusing for paintballing to be honest. The moves would be gone by the time it's sorted itself out.

Eddie: Personally if you are travelling I'd go for a compact many of which have the apature/shutter speed settings nowadays. If you want a SLR-esque camera just get an SLR and sod it. Midway is just annoying as it's in neither camp and is just more bulk to carry that isn't needed.
Leica do a lovely range of compacts and will give you awesome photos.
hehe, i use jessops to find what i want (was only using it to show him what sort of focal length he should get), then buy from a family friend that own's a photography shop.
i wouldnt go mid/entry level, thats why i got rid of my d50.. but i never got round to replacing it.. so i just have a little compact camera.
best thing for anyone to do, is set yourself a budget, and stick to it.

and cos little shops need the buisness - usually hidden away somewhere but when you find them they are goldmines
Personally reccomend Nikon's as i'm a registered pro. But go to jessops and feel fondle and try every one you can afford. The new d40 is nice and so is the d80.
Make sure you get a lens that covers the long telephoto region (eg. 70-300)
also invest in a skylight/uv filter to protect the front optic of the lens and a camera cover to protect the lens and body of the camera.

They tend to be retailers, not camera specialists. The people there can have little knowledge and thus talk utter testicles to you. Prices are high as well and selection limited. As Dan says go in there and touch everything up that you can, see if you like the feel of a certain camera, talk to them about it, don't take it as gospel and then go and read stuff about it on the net.
Warehouse express I've found to be one of the cheapest sites and very good customer service as well. Pixmania is also cheap though often the cameras don't come with a British manual which is a real pain if you get an SLR from them.
Im looking at either the Canon 400D or the Sony alpha 100.

getting to a point now where my photography skills are advancing faster than my equipment can handle,

Also want a fisheye lense, but they cost fffaaaaarrrr too much for the amount id be using it
