Welcome
Have you bought any gear yet, if you are planning on any purchases then stop, run through the forum for information, and then still don't buy anything
Try to get to shops, events stalls, a walkon etc to check out gear in the flesh
Which brings us to where are you?
How much have you played?
Are you attracted to any paintball styles yet?
Are you aware of the styles & flavours of paintball around?

Have a nose at:
http://p8ntballer-forums.com/threads/what-paintball-costs.153010/

Also check out the paintball show:
http://thepaintballshow.tv/home/4567629176

Click 'watch' at the top of the above link then you can pick any past dates
Pay particular attention to the fat bobs shows on Thursdays with a lot of info for new players
If you have sky you can watch on tv on Tuesdays & Thursdays
But (secret tip) when the show goes out on tv it also goes out online, the later episodes may go active at the same time so you could watch something early

Last years series 1 is also available online:

As usually a lot of good information, @tommikka you are like a living encyclopaedia (in the good way).

Tom is our teams go to guy for anything paintball related specially if it's something old or obscure. He's just a pb sponge both on and off the field.

As opinionated as I am, I'm not always the expert
Shane (nuts above) would be our team 'go to guy' for the ego

Egos are very good guns, and popular
They may be a big step for the new player - good equipment comes with the requirement to look after it

But I wouldn't want to put off a young player from a good gun if they will have a mind to understanding and looking after the gun
Others on the forum can recommend the ego or alternates - but getting to check out and have hands on with a few guns is the best way

Ps: if your son is tempted by the ego because he looks up to it as nice and shiney then it's too early to commit to that
If he's been around and has formed his own opinion and preferences then go ahead
