Paintball fails to meet even the first requirement to be a recognised sport as mandated by the olympics.

To make it onto the Olympic programme, a sport first has to be recognised: it must be administered by an International Federation which ensures that the sport's activities follow the Olympic Charter. If it is widely practised around the world and meets a number of criteria established by the IOC session, a recognised sport may be added to the Olympic programme on the recommendation of the IOC's Olympic Programme Commission

International Federations are responsible for one sport (or a group of similar sport disciplines, such as aquatics or skiing). They create a common set of rules and organise international competitions. The promotion of the sport is also a task of an international federation. Trusts are organizations or groups that have control over money that will be used to help someone else, such as the Youth Sport Trust. National Federations have the same objectives as an international federation, but within the scope of one country, or even part of a country, as the name implies. They support local clubs and are often responsible for national teams.

Paintball is not a sport. There are clearly elements of top class, international tournament paintball that requires a degree of athleticsm. However, "Paintball is not a sport". It is a hobby, a pastime and generally an excuse to fulfill (at some level) the male need to shoot each other in the head!

There's nothing wrong with saying paintball isn't a sport. Just like there's nothing wrong with paintball not being successful on TV. It would be nice if it were but it's not gonna happen... at least in the short term.

The PA was set up in such a way as to allow an application to the Sports Council to be made so paintball could be recognised as a sport.

Unfortunately, the death of the PA meant that initiative died also. And what didn't help was that the application was opposed by a certain organisation.

Saying its not a sport, is mistaken. i mean Chess is a sport, darts is a sport and bog diving is a sport. Sure it may not "feel" like a sport, or certain elements may not match to other sporting trends but in technical terms, it is.

Im sick of reading about this stuff for my dissertation, and now its appearing on the forum! :p help me! haha :D

Unfortunately, we are not a sport. We don't even have one set of rules.

Ok... you're using Chess and Darts to justify your argument is absolutely perfect. Paintball in the UK is basically a blend of the 2. Unfit, beer-drinking men trying to get an angle on their opposition in order to "kill" them. Perfect. :)

As for bog diving... when was the last time you risked using a portaloo at a site or tournament?

Come off it! You'll have to use some better examples than that to justify your argument! I hope your dissertation is better than that :D ;)

Basically, the current fractured format of paintball invalidates any "offical" chance of recognition.

And herein lies the problem. Any offical worldwide body would by nature be able to turn it to large profits very easily once it became recognised, anyone can see this, and the greed within the industry would stop people seeing past the green to realise, offical recognition could lead to much more positive things.
