The dust still hasn't settled on this, so why can't we just fly around, under or over the ash cloud?

According to Radio 4, the UK's no-fly stance is based on a safety document written some 30 years ago which hasn't been updated, following an incident involving a 747 flying through a similar cloud.

We now have Airlines wanting government bailouts as they have lost so much cash.

Wouldn't it be easy to send up a Predator drone to fly through the cloud and see what happens to it?

Heck, the Predator could even film what is happening.

Overreaction? You decide.

im wondering about the military stance on all this over the domestic, my reason why is even though all flights in and out of england are grounded the war in afghanistan rages on and active military personel are still getting wounded and in dire need of flights home for the treatment they deserve. anyone know if military flights are still going?

The main reason they are grounded is because of this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_9

Basically two 747's almost fell out of the sky.

A Briitish Airways 747 had all four engines shutdown after flying through a volcanic ash cloud in 1982.
A KLM 747 had the same thing happen in 1989.
Arrr i remember watching an episode of air crash investigation about this. One thing got from watching it is that surprisingly volcanic ash can be extremely hazardas to air craft.

oooo found it :
Pretty interesting.
